John Burley Swainson was born on July 31, 1925 in Windsor, Ontario. His family moved to Port Huron, Mich. when he was nine months old. He entered the Army Specialized Training Program immediately after high school and was sent overseas with the 95th Infantry Division under the command of General George C. Patton.
